A Nagasaki si celebrano le nozze fra Pinkerton, giovane tenente della marina americana e Butterfly una giovane e bellissima geisha. Dopo la cerimonia i giovani trascorrono giorni lieti finché una mattina Pinkerton parte con la promessa di rientrare dopo poco. Butterfly guarda tristemente la sua nave prendere il mare: ancora non sa che da quel giorno passerranno tre lunghi anni prima che possa rivedere l’amato. Proprio questo giorno, il giorno tanto sognato in cui Butterfly e Pinkerton si rivedono si trasformerà per la giovane nel giorno in cui, “come le farfalle, uno spillo la trafiggerà per legarla per sempre ad una tavola”.
The setting is Nagasaki, Japan. Pinkerton, a U.S. naval offi cer, and Butterfl y, a young and beautiful geisha, are getting married. The couple spends some happy days together after the wedding, but one morning Pinkerton decides to go back to America. Before leaving, he promises Butterfl y that he will return as soon as possible. Butterfly watches sadly as Pinkerton’s ship leaves the port. She doesn’t know that three long years will pass before she sees her beloved again. When that day fi nally arrives, instead of a joyful reunion, the beautiful geisha receives shocking news that will lead to a tragic end.
